I enjoyed looking at these diabetic tattoos. I read that the reasons many of the owners got them was because they didn't want to wear a medical alert bracelet. I think if that's your reason, you have to be honest and say that you really want a tattoo. If I don't want to wear a bracelet or necklace, I just... don't.
Part of me wonders... maybe I'm wrong in my decision on this, but, from my experience it isn't necessary. I guess I've always felt that it's my job to protect myself by being really careful with insulin.
What do you think about them? (not tattoos, medical alert jewelry)
What do I do? I have a card in my wallet that says that I'm a diabetic. Is that enough? So far no one has ever seen it.
If I were to ever get a tattoo, it would be a conversation starter. I love to have conversations about diabetes, so I guess it's pretty likely that I might get one like that. But, I'm not really a tattoo person.
Yeah, I don't want a tattoo. I think it could be helpful, but when I've considered it, I've tried to think of places I could put it where no one would see it... Kind of defeats the purpose! I've never worn a medical bracelet. Like you, I've never had to get help. (Knock on wood.) I always, always have something sweet with me, and tend to be really careful, like you. Would it be safer to have an identifying mark or tag of some sort? Yes! Have I chosen to do it? No...
ReplyDeleteOne more thing-- diabetes has never been one of my distinguishing features. I worked closely with people for years without them knowing I was diabetic. I think it's because the pity reactions I got when I was a teen were so mortifying to me, I have always preferred to not make it part of my public identity. Is it the safest option? No, but I try to be smart and tell the people that I think should know.
DeleteI think it's interesting that people get tattoos. I'm not a tattoo person either so I wouldn't get one, myself. But, I wear a bracelet now just when I go somewhere alone, like if I travel and stay in a hotel alone. But, I've never needed the use of a medical alert and agree that we should take insulin seriously and be really careful with it.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty smart Sysy. I think it's a very practical approach. I'll have to adopt that when I travel, or do stuff alone like that.
DeleteI used to wear a necklace and/or a bracelet, but at that time, I wore more jewelry anyway. Now, I don't like much of anything on me. I guess I feel like my insulin pump is enough of an accessory, and maybe even a medical alert.
